Herbaceous and stoloniferous; stem 10–30 cm long, covered in closely packed leaves in whorls of 5; stolons from stem base and/or from among the leaves. Leaves porrect, cylindrical, 8–15 cm long, slightly rough, tapering to a sharp spiny apex to 5 mm long, upper surface with a flattened shallow channel 25–75 % of its length with green margins and with a white membrane over a brown-red longitudinal line reaching halfway; lamina dark green marked with grey-green cross-banding plus 4–6 dark green longitudinal lines turning into grooves, almost to the apex, one of these on the upper surface and through the channel. Inflorescence erect or slightly curved, 12–25 cm long; peduncle 3–8 mm in diameter; flowers dense in the upper half of the inflorescence, 1–2 per cluster; bracts 4, triangular, to 6 × 3 mm; bracteoles absent; pedicel 2 mm long. Flower greenish white to brownish green, perianth tube 16–19 mm long, lobes reflexed, 8–10 mm long; stamens 10 mm long, anthers 2 mm long; style ± 13 mm long.
