Loop's Pride

Sansevieria 'Loop's Pride', discovered in the mid-60s at Loop's Nursery in Jacksonville, Florida, is a very unusual member of the Hahnii bird's-nest group of Sansevierias. Its leaves are thick, fleshy and brittle, and bear longitudinal ridges their entire length. The color is a dark greenish-black. The edges of some leaves may show a narrow margin of lighter gray cross-banding. New growth produces leaves that curve inward, only to eventually flatten and curve outward with age, reaching a maximum length of about 5 inches, with a very short tip . . . or no pointed tip at all.

'Loop's Pride' has needs somewhat different from those of other bird's-nest, or Hahnii, types. It likes to be kept warm in the winter, either by resting on a heat mat, positioned under a bright light, or by being kept in a room that stays warm both day and night. It is quite sensitive to being kept wet, so "dry and warm," with minimal care, is the key to growing beautiful specimens.

It is a slow grower, seldom offered for sale. A leaf cutting of 'Loop's Pride' will occasionally produce a Hahnii cultivar known as 'Hahnii Malachite', but will not revert back to the typical S. ‘Hahnii’.

Interestingly when leaves of S. t. 'Loop's pride' are put down they produce
another variety similar to plain old S. t. hahnii but with smaller thicker
leaves. I understand this variety is called S. t. 'malachite', which itself
will come true from leaves.
